Charity care and financial assistance

"Kind deeds are like little prayers."

When illness or injury strikes, there is more than a physical toll. Patients and families also face mental, emotional and financial stress. Through the BJC financial assistance program, those in great need are able to gain relief at a time when they feel overwhelmed and hopeless. Assistance takes the form of free care, reduced charges and interest-free payment plans, all based on individual need. Community benefit financial activity also includes unreimbursed Medicaid – where the cost of providing services to patients is greater than the payment received from the government program – and charity-eligible care, or bills that are never paid by those presumed to be eligible for BJC financial assistance had they gone through the process.

Patients often speak from the heart in expressing how much this help can mean when they need it most.

My son and I would like to express our gratitude for giving him financial assistance during this exhausting and exacerbating time in his life. At such a young age and just beginning a career makes it hard for someone to prepare for such illnesses, and then the financial strain that comes afterwards can just be overwhelming. This will be remembered and appreciated forever.

"I received letters telling me that some of my expenses were covered by the Zuhlke Endowment Fund. I am so grateful for the excellent treatment and care I received that literally saved my life. I am equally grateful for all of the financial assistance I have been given to cover the cost of my care."

"I really appreciate your understanding of my financial plight. I work every day and I am continuously “taking some from Peter to pay Paul.” I am committed to paying my bills, however, so many times I fall behind. It is a blessing and a tremendous help."

"We are so thankful for this assistance with our bills. It couldn’t have come at a better time. We are so grateful and blessed. God bless you!"
